In a fuzzy blink of an eye, a year has passed and here we are getting ready to embrace a new year. Setting new year resolutions or goals has always been a fun tradition I do since young. It is a good way to do a mental reboot of what has worked for us and what needs to be do away, so we can start the new year with a fresh outlook and tons of enthusiasm.
But what if you are also trying to make an effort to live a slower, more intentional life and live in the moment, rather than always chasing something and waiting for some point in the future? Or have the goals you set been pushed back year after year? How do you get out of the “daily scramble” and start hitting those goals?
As a busy entrepreneur and personal stylist, the result of setting goals has been so satisfying and great accomplishment for my own journey and my clients. Work-life balance that produces results, happy clients with a refreshed wardrobe look and more importantly, empowered to lead a more intentional life filled with joy and purpose.
Because I know it has worked for me and my clients, I can’t wait to share with you my three top tips for setting (and achieving) goals. If you haven’t yet, take half an hour or so to review your past year with these questions before you start working on your goals. Becoming aware of what went well during the past year and what didn’t will help you set more meaningful goals that are truly in line with your priorities.
GOAL SETTING STRATEGIES
1 Setting your vision
Everybody ends up somewhere in life. Many of you have multiple roles to play in your life, be it a loving husband, successful career woman, or well-respected leader, but only the ones with vision end up somewhere on purpose. Before you even get started on setting goals, you need to know what is the vision you have for yourself. Be it your personal life, family role or even career, where do you see yourself in 1 year, 6 months or even 1 week?
In my style sessions, the first question I always ask my clients is, “Describe to me how you want to see yourself after 3 months.” Whether you are aware of it or not, you have a mental picture of how you want your life to look like down the road. With a clear vision, you should be able to look beyond now have a clear mental picture of how you see yourself in the various roles in your life. For example, if you are single now and desires to settle down, you may vision yourself (exactly how you want to look) with a life partner in the mental picture. Without a clear vision, odds are you will come to a point in your life and wonder, “What I could have done – what I should have done to change the outcome.”
I strongly encourage to keep a book where you can pen down the visions you see yourself. If graphics works better than words for you, draw it out! Only with this vision, are you ready to ask yourself, “What are the next steps (your goals) I need to take to help me get there?”
VISION-DRIVEN PEOPLE ARE MOTIVATED PEOPLE.
2 Understand your motivation behind each goal (Find Your Whys)
If your goal is exciting and big enough, it will take a lot of effort and time to achieve, whether you want to start a business, lose some weight, or work towards a promotion. And during that time you will undoubtedly feel tired, exhausted and like giving up at some point. The comfort-seeking parts of your brain will try to convince you that it’s ok to give up, that your current status quo is totally fine and the effort isn’t worth it.
As a personal stylist, though my role may appear to be simply helping my clients achieve an image makeover, I always take time to really understand WHY do they want to go through this styling process. WHAT is it about their now (current looks) they are not happy about. WHAT do they believe can be achieved/changed after going through a wardrobe styling makeover. HOW would they feel if they did not go through this styling process.
Reserve at least twenty minutes per goal to really figure out WHY you want to achieve it. Why do you want to find a better job, get fit or start your own business? What is your core motivation for it, what aspects of your life will improve and how will you feel? Jot them down in your book, until you have captured all of your emotions and your reasoning behind your goal.
3 Focus on the process, not the outcome
Once you have figured out why you want to achieve your goals, it’s time to plan out the HOW. Now, instead of mapping out every sub-goal and creating a rigid time schedule, i.e. being very outcome-driven, try a different approach: Focus on the process, the daily habits that will get you there.
For example, if one of your goals is to gain an advancement in your career, instead of simply working hard at your daily role and slashing KPIs, commit to be well-groomed and how you carry yourself, continuously involve yourself in learning new skill sets and enjoy the process. To see yourself in that role, it starts from believing right (inside you) by preparing yourself to dress, walk, talk and work like one.
