5 Skincare Products Every Acne-Prone Skin Needs

I live in Singapore and this means I get to eat a lot of yummy food (curries, coffee with milk, nasi lemak with sambal!!) However, the richness of these foods often led to the growth of acne on my lower jaw and chin. If that is not bad enough, the humid weather in Singapore made it worse! Having a proper routine skincare treatment for prevention and treatment of acne on my skin is really important! Hence I am constantly researching and trying out new products and today I am sharing with you what is top on my list!

1. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel for Oily Sensitive Skin

Purpose: Cleansing

I remember my friend telling me she just kept washing her face to dry out the acne on her skin but this is actually very drying for your skin on a whole. I love this cleanser as it is non-drying and low pH! There is fragrance in it but it is very mild. I use this for a morning cleanse and it makes me feel fresh and clean. It is important to have low pH cleanser – around pH5.5 – to maintain the health of the skin barrier. A cleanser with too high pH can throw your skin off balance or over time damage the skin barrier. This could cause your skin to produce more oil or allow bacteria or irritants to enter your skin.

2. COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid

Purpose: Exfoliant

This is one of my favourite brands due to their low cost and no fragrance. This does smell a bit funky but it doesn’t bother me at all. I use this to prevent black heads and to minimise clogging of my skin. I use it almost everyday – morning and night but if you are starting out on actives don’t use it everyday!

BHA actually stands for beta hydroxy acid. This is a gentle chemical exfoliant for your skin and it can dislodge your dead skin cells attached to the upper layers of your skin and also works inside the pores to dissolve excess oil which will lessen clogged pores. I can attest to the fact that this acid is not harsh at all! Some advocate letting the BHA work before you apply other skincare, so sometimes I leave it on my face for 20 minutes or more and amazingly it does not dry my skin at all! Exfoliating your skin is important as it removes the dead skin cells which may trap oil and dirt and cause pimples! I do use physical exfoliants sometimes but I tend to rub my face too hard which may damage my skin barrier so chemical exfoliation is a safer way for me!

3. COSRX Natural BHA Skin Returning A-Sol

Purpose: Spot Treatment

I use this for spot treatment. It is a very watery product, which is a huge difference from the Oxy cream we are used to. It is difficult to control the amount of product that comes out from the bottle using the pump though. This product has helped to reduce the size of my acne greatly overnight. When I use it on acne without “head”, the head will surface soon after 1 or 2 days. This is not drying and does not cause dry patches on my face, unlike the traditional acne treatments. This contains propolis extract and tea tree extract which has soothing properties.

4. Naruko Tea Tree Shine Control & Blemish Clear Mask

Purpose: Treatment mask

When I am faced with acne problems, I love applying sheet masks! Tea tree is one of the ingredients that helped to sooth my acne due to its anti-bacterial properties. It is also important to hydrate your skin even while having acne. Because dehydrated skin could be one of the reasons why your face is over-producing sebum. This mask contains hydrators like sodium hyaluronate and is also armed with anti-inflammatory ingredients like tea tree and licorice root extract. Tranexamic Acid in the mask also provide whitening effects for redness and acne marks.

5. Cosrx Acne Pimple Master Patch

Purpose: Acne treatment

Apply one of these pimple master patch over your pimple after it burst! It will absorb the pus and help to flatten it and prevent it from growing back. It will also prevent bacteria from going in and keep our itchy fingers from touching it. It sticks best when you stick it on after cleansing. It can also be used under makeup which is what I do sometimes. They are not entirely unnoticeable until you look closely! Absolutely a great cover even without makeup on!
